Early Literacy Play AreasPlaying with the dollhouse

Our new library has two play areas to help children develop early literacy skills. “Early literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read or write. You can help develop early literacy skills by reading and talking about books and telling stories to children starting at birth….Children get ready to read long before they start school. . . .Parents can help children grow up to be successful readers and learners beginning at birth….Early literacy is what parents can do to help their children become aware of and comfortable with books and language.” (from Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library) To help their children acquire the “Six Skills to Get Ready to Read,” (print motivation, phonological awareness, vocabulary, narrative skills, print awareness, and letter knowledge), parents are strongly encouraged to interact with their children in the Early Literacy Play Areas, which include books, puzzles, a doll house, a play kitchen, a train table, magnetic and bead play islands, phonetic games, and other educational toys. Most of the items in these areas have signs to assist parents in discovering how these toys are important to children’s intellectual and social development in preparation for school.
