During the war Juliet Ashton wrote a chatty, cheerful newspaper column. Now that the war is over, she is struggling to find a purpose and a subject for her next book. When Dawsey Adams, a man from Guernsey finds her name written on a used book, he writes to her seeking more books by the author. Juliet and Dawsey start exchanging letters. Soon, several residents of Guernsey are corresponding with her and engaging Juliet in the life of the islanders and their experiences during the war.
