Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See

June 7, 2011, 7 pm

In 1903, 80-year-old Lily reflects on her life and friendship with Snow Flower. In the rural Chinese province where they grew up, women were often raised in seclusion, had their feet bound, and were formally paired with a lifelong female friend. Communication between these friends was conducted in secret writing on Chinese fans. The women live through arranged marriages, motherhood, famine, rebellion, and a misunderstanding that threatens to destroy their friendship. Beautifully written and well-researched, See brings to life the tale of two friends and what their lives were like in a place long ago and far away.
