Red House, The

Author: Haddon, Mark
Genre: General Fiction

2012; 264 pages

After their mother’s death, Richard, a wealthy doctor invites his estranged sister Angela’s family to join his family for a week in the country. He, Louisa his second wife and her daughter Melissa are joined by Angela and Dominic and their children Alex, Daisy and Benjy. As the week passes they confront personal crises and for some, resolution.

APPEAL: This is told is a stream of consciousness - like style. Random thoughts, observations of the items in a store display, the text from a poem or book, television programming and games are interspersed with italicized dialogue. Each character reveals his thoughts, faults and frailties through dialogue and thoughts and observations. It takes a while to determine who is thinking and speaking. This book can be difficult to read or listen to at first.
