State of Wonder

by Ann Patchett

Following the death of her colleague Anders Echman somewhere in the jungles of the Amazon, Minnesota pharmaceutical scientist Marina Singh is sent to learn the details of his death and to check on the progress of their fellow-re-
searcher, Dr. Swensen. Swenson has been working on a wonder fertility drug and studying an Amazon tribe whose women continue to bear children into their 60s and 70s, though she has shared very little of her progress to their employer. Marina finds herself in the very heart of darkness, a bewildering world of insects, snakes and cannibals. Patchett is the author of Bel Canto which in 2001 was awarded both the Orange Prize for Fiction and the PEN/ Faulkner Award for Fiction.
