Book Review: 'Go Fresh: A Heart-Healthy Cookbook '

by Brittany Burns, Children’s Services Associate  August 2022

Cover of Go Fresh cookbookWe all have things we like to do in our free time. One of my favorite things to do is to eat and one of my favorite things to eat is a homecooked meal. This makes things a little harder as I am the one that has to cook it and I am not a master chef. Something that has really helped me is the cookbooks that we have at the library.

My favorite cookbook is American Heart Association Go Fresh: A Heart-Healthy Cookbook with Shopping and Storage Tips by the American Heart Association. It has one of my new favorite recipes, Chicken Gumbo. I love New Orleans food but I do not really like seafood. It has been very hard to find a gumbo recipe without seafood! When I was looking through this book to see if any recipes sounded good and were easy enough for me to cook, I found the Chicken Gumbo recipe. I knew I needed this cookbook and checked it out immediately.

Later that week, I tried to make the Gumbo for the first time and it turned out really well. The recipe was not only easy to cook, but it is also sooo tasty! I shared it with my roommate and my family, and they all agreed it is amazing and wanted the recipe. I have since tried many other recipes from this book that have turned out just as well. Go Fresh also has a lot of smoothie recipes that sound fantastic!

While I was looking for this book, I saw many other cookbooks in the library's catalog that looked just as promising as Go Fresh. I’ve since been back to check out even more cookbooks and I love cooking now. All because I wanted a homecooked meal and the library had a great collection of cookbook that I couldn’t wait to try. Cooking and baking are great activities that everyone can get involved with no matter what age they are!
