What is Mindfulness and Why Does It Matter?

Mindfulness is the act of focusing on the present moment. By using mindful practices, you become more aware of what is going on inside you and around you.  You also have a better connection to your thoughts, feelings, sensations, and environment.

According to the National Institutes of Health, practicing mindfulness has a positive impact on health and well-being, including reducing anxiety and depression, lowering blood pressure, and improving sleep.

Like many things, practicing mindfulness is sometimes easier said than done. It can be difficult to pay attention to what is going on in the moment. We often spend more time thinking about what’s coming up in the future or dwelling on things in the past that we can’t change. With mindfulness, we can focus on experiencing the present.

Becoming more mindful may require practice, but most of the activities are fairly simple. Here are a few to help get you started:

  • Boxed breathing: Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, and then exhale out the mouth for 4 counts. Repeat.
  • Enjoy a walk: As you walk, notice your breath and the sights and sounds around you. As thoughts and worries enter your mind, note them, but then return to the present.
  • Mindful eating: Try to limit distractions such as phones, TV, books, etc. while you eat. Be aware of taste, textures, and flavors in each bite, and listen to your body when you are hungry and full.

There are also great resources at the library to help you on your mindfulness journey. We offer yoga and meditation classes, mindfulness-based stress reduction programs, and reading materials. Whether you are a beginner or have been practicing mindfulness for years, the library has something for you.
